There is a tantalizing effort described at Naked Objects that offers a tantalizing---and different---approach to some aspects of the design of systems which interact with users.

Pawson and Matthews have a nice Introduction to their material, which is worth reading. The work described is preliminary, and the implementation seems a bit slow, but the idea also seems good enough to be worth looking at.
